BREAKING NEWS: Women watch porn!

Ok, that’s not really breaking news, everyone knows that women watch porn (at least I hope you know). But there’s something coming to America that should facilitate women watching porn. It’s a 24/7 porn for women channel called Dusk and here’s what you need to know about it.

Dusk has been running for four years in the Netherlands and has established itself as the place for Dutch women to enjoy porn for women. The channel has become so popular that it’s even spawned the word “porna” in Dutch, which I assume is the feminine version of “porno” if Dutch is anything like French or Spanish.

According to Dusk co-founder Martijn Broersma, “If you call it porn, [women] say that’s disgusting. We invented the word ‘porna’ to give it a more feminine touch.”

Ariel Schwartz, writing for Fast Company, notes that the channel has been designed to give its users the last say. “Dusk is unique in more ways than one,” she writes. “All programming is decided by an open panel of women, dubbed the Dusk Panel. Women in the Netherlands can join the online panel for free, but since it’s closed to international users, I was unable to participate. Broersma says that women who subscribe are presented with scenes and asked to explain whether they like them or not and why. The audience decides what porna is–not the channel’s executives.”

Not only is it extremely cool that the audience gets to decide what makes it on the program, I think it’s necessary because no one seems to know what the hell “porn for women” is. Schwartz points out that “there are some common threads: Women want to see attractive ‘normal’ people (like porn star James Deen, for example) who look like they’re actually enjoying themselves. They look for extensive foreplay, nice scenery, good lighting and camera work, and sex that is explicit without being overly rough.”

Ok fair enough. I guess normal body types, extensive foreplay, nice scenery, good lighting and camera work, and not overly rough sex could qualify as porn for women, but as someone who sees a lot of porn from 9 to 5 Monday to Friday, I would say that most mainstream porn incorporates all these elements. But hey that’s just me.

Dusk and “porna” might just appeal to women more because it’s packaged specifically for them? And they have their input.

Ultimately, all I can think of is that interview I did with Dana Vespoli. I tried to ask her about feminist porn and porn for women because her name always comes up in the discussion and all she had to say was, “It’s porn.” It’s all porn in the end. To try and categorize sexual niches, fetishes, or even the visual style of the porn into Male or Female is just kind of stupid.

Think about it this way, what if someone told you about this new music genre called “Rap Music for Women”. You’d be like, “Um…Don’t women like rap music?” Well, yes but it’s so male dominated and misogynistic that we’ve decided to rebrand with “Rap Music for Women” with rap music that’s more female friendly. At the end of the day, it’s still rap music. Right? It doesn’t mean that women don’t like regular rap music nor does it mean that men can’t enjoy “Rap Music for Women”.

Whatever. If Dusk helps women become more comfortable with enjoying adult content and expressing their sexuality in a positive way, that’s all that matters.

Anyways, Dusk expects to launch in the US as early as the first quarter of 2014 so be on the lookout.

The real question is, does anyone really want to watch porn on TV when we have such excellent websites like Sex.com that can provide you with all the porn you could ever want, whenever you want, totally free?
