A new study published in Psychology of Women Quarterly claims that watching porn makes people less likely to support women in the workplace. And when I say “people”, I’m including men and women.

Researchers interviewed 190 people over the course of a few years and after controlling for religion and cultural background, they found that watching pornography made people less likely to support affirmative action for women.

But why?

The researchers suggest that, “Pornography often presents women as sexual objects deserving of degradation, and even aggression. In alignment with these depictions, prior studies have found that pornography viewers are more likely to hold a variety of antisocial attitudes towards women.”

I understand that pornography viewers are more likely to be antisocial towards women because most pornography viewers have never seen a woman in real life, so they just come off as shy. But does that really mean they don’t want to hire women?

“Practically,” Paul J. Wright, the study’s author writes, “these results suggest that pornography may be a social influence that undermines support for affirmative action programs for women.”

As a person who watches a lot of porn professionally and works with lots of women, I really don’t want to believe the results.

To test the validity of this new porn study, I’d like to take a vote.

Obviously, if you’re here on Sex.com, you have just watched porn or possibly about to watch porn (if it’s your first time watching pornos, I’m sorry). Because you watch porn, I’d like to ask you:

Do you support affirmative action for women?

I do agree that pornography can at times depict women as sexual objects. Does this mean they are deserving of degradation and aggression? I don’t think so. Nor do I think that seeing nude women in porn movies makes real women undeserving of affirmative action initiatives.

Let me just say that if support for affirmative action loses, I’m going to be very disappointed.

However you decided to vote, just remember that porn isn’t real. It’s a performance. You can’t let it affect the way you treat real people. That includes men and women.

You wouldn’t treat an Italian-American differently after watching The Sopranos would you? So why would porn make you treat women differently?

Please vote and discuss in the comments.
