Porn iTunes

Believe it or not, the porn industry is in trouble. You’d never know it based on the ubiquity of porn on the internet or the mainstream media’s fascination with the adult industry, but it is.

So what’s threatening the porn industry? Is it the risk of STIs? Is it the moral right wing trying to spoil our fun?

Nope!

The greatest threat to the porn industry is piracy. It’s slowly but surely bankrupting porn studios all over the world.

Porn is something that we all enjoy for free…

But you should know by now that nothing is free. So while we can watch all the porn and never pay a cent, the fact is that the perverts that make the porn and the pretty girls starring in the porn are the ones that are paying for it.

Historically speaking, the porn industry has always been a trendsetter in how we consume media. And while they were right to conquer the internet, when it came to monetizing content online, they fell behind.

While services like iTunes and Netflix were able to persuade people to pay for content they would usually pirate, porn has yet to figure out a way to get people paying and it’s left the adult industry reeling. But that could soon change…

Two companies are planning to launch competing services that would give porn fans access to vast libraries of porn at a price that they would be willing to pay.

The first service is from a company called SkweezMe. They are scheduled to launch a video-on-demand service that will resemble iTunes by the end of the month. According to CNBC, “…customers can pay 99 cents to get unlimited access to the service’s collection of high definition films.

“Recurring billing is a marketer’s dream, but it can be a consumer’s nightmare,” said Jamey Kirby, president of SkweezMe.

MindGeek (the company formerly known as Manwin) will be launching a similar platform sometime in 2014 but the details are murky. It’s very likely that MindGeek’s platform will draw exclusively from its own library of movies, which includes Brazzers, Digital Playground, etc.

SkweezMe, on the other hand, is affiliating itself with non-Manwin studios like Vivid and Elegant Angel. Studios will be compensated via a revenue-share model, dividing 25 percent of the monthly revenue generated by the service.

“It’s very difficult to say you’re going to create the iTunes of porn,” Scott Taylor, owner of porn studio New Sensations, told CNBC “I think people over the past years have decided that it’s a God-given right that porn is free.”

SkweezMe has no delusions that their platform will eliminate porn piracy all-together. However SkeezMe co-founder Mike Kulich is certain that people would give users to consume porn honestly, which could work.

“Music piracy was running rampant in the late ’90s,” Kulich said. “Apple came out with a pricing model saying ‘we’re not going to eliminate piracy, but we believe there is a large segment that’s pirating music because it is the only way to get music onto their computers.’ So they created a service where they thought they could pick some of that piracy up off of the floor and make some money from it. … We don’t expect to be able to recuperate the $4 billion the industry loses each year to piracy, but it would be nice if we could recuperate a portion of it.”

If you’ve made it all the way to the end of this blog post, all I want to know is whether or not a Porn iTunes platform would be something you would be interested in.

So… Would you buy porn from a Porn iTunes?

Hey thanks for reading all this crap and voting in this poll!

If you have more to say than just “Yes” or “No”, please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
