Mariah Milano was one of my porn stars. I say “was” because she’s not really doing porn anymore. She’s moved on to bigger and better things. What exactly are these bigger and better things?

Well, Mariah was nice enough to stop by the Blog and talk about her new projects, the state of the adult industry, and food.

So without further ado, here is the Mariah Milano interview. (as always my questions are in bold and her responses are normal)

You were in the adult industry for a long time, how would you say the industry has changed from when you were 18 and just starting out?
Well for one the internet is now king. When I started in 98 everyone clowned the internet shoots. My agent discouraged me from doing them. They paid so much less and were shitty quality shoots. And the industry is now in serious trouble because of piracy. The girls make less and the budgets are so small they rush everything. Testing has become a mess with AIM gone. The girls are all escorts full time and shoot scenes part time just to keep their hourly rates up. I have never escorted and never will, but I am one of the very few who don’t.

Only recently did I learn about porn stars escorting. How is it treated within the industry? Is it frowned upon or is it silently accepted?
Sadly it is accepted, and not so silently. The agencies that book talent for shoots also book for escort appointments. I have been vocal about it and have been met with a lot of aggression and lost some friends. I don’t give 2 shits if girls are prostitutes. I just think that when they turn tricks in a hotel room with an untested stranger and the nest day show up on set and shoot a scene, they bring an extreme increase in health risk to an already risky situation.

More and more I’m seeing porn scenes where the set-up is an escort date, which I would have assumed no-one would want to touch on. What do you make of this phenomenon? Is it like a crazy psychological marketing technique to attract fans?

I think that it plays into the fantasy aspect of it. Once upon a time porn stars were mythical creatures fans only saw on film or when they feature danced at a strip club or appeared at a convention. Now they are inter-acting with them on a personal basis on social media sites, doing webcam shows with them, etc. They have become real, attainable people. Porn girls have ads placed on escort sites and are easily researched and hired with a click of a mouse. It has changed the dynamic of the “Porn Star”. So the theme of porn stars being escorts portraying the “girlfriend experience” in videos is to be expected. At least that’s my take on it all.

How did you reach the decision to stop performing? Was it much different than when you decided to take a hiatus in 2000?

I got to the point where I dreaded it. It wasn’t fun anymore and I knew my luck was due to run out with the STDs that are rampant in the industry. I never got so much as a scare, so I am extremely lucky. With the testing problems and the rates being paid it just wasn’t worth it for me any longer. It was very much like 2000 when I stopped shooting. It wasn’t fun anymore and I was just sick of it.

What’s going on with if you’re not doing internet or studio shoots?

I am slammed busy with my cooking shows and traveling to host events and finishing my cookbook, which is where my future is. Or at least it looks that way as of now!

Dinner With Mariah is one of the best food blogs I’ve ever seen. How did the blog come together?

I was doing themed cam shows as a contracted spokesmodel for and decided to do a cooking theme one night. It was so popular and fun that I started shooting cooking videos, not live videos, but actual edited videos. The site took off in a big way immediately and I just ran with it. I have traveled in Europe a lot, particularly France and Italy where the food is just amazing. It’s a way of life and prepared with such passion and pride. I taught myself and I do okay, but I have a lot to learn.

and Dinner with a Pornstar were at one point the same site, are you trying to distance yourself from porn?

Well at first I was doing just cooking and used  Then I started adding videos and photos from my travels and it became something bigger and better. I decided to split them up and focus on what would be more lucrative for me and that would be the cooking shows. I can shoot those all the time and keep updated a lot easier than travel. So far it has become incredible with an Alexa score under 10k and my YouTube channel has become a huge hit. I hope that answered that question lol

Did you really teach yourself to cook? The reason I have to ask is because your dishes all have very professional presentations that one would not always associate with self-taught cooking.

Really??? I think my presentation is awful lol but thank you so much! I am 100% self-taught. Many times the videos I shoot are the first time I have ever even tried the food, much less tried to cook it. I have heard other online cooking show hosts say they make each dish off camera first then shoot it, but I don’t. I would say 90% of the videos I shoot are my first time eating the food and cooking it.

Since 90% of the videos you shoot are new foods, do you ever have to re-shoot segments or do you just have a gift?
I wouldn’t go so far as to say I have a gift. I’m just not going crazy with intricate difficult dishes. I want to present meals that a novice can cook and not be intimidated by. I want to inspire people to try to make the foods I cook, rather than see me making things that just look difficult and too challenging for a beginner.

Why does everyone assume that a former porn star that’s also a foodie would be into food-play?

I have no idea. People take many liberties in assuming things about porn stars. They see us as sex robots that just want to fuck all day every day. I get many emails every day that say things like “so how do I get to fuck you?” or “here’s my number. call me so we can meet up!” and they include pictures of their cocks. It’s so ridiculous. I used to reply and give them a bit of an ego check, but now I have too much to do to humor the mindless fools out there.

You’ve traveled all around the world to eat authentic food, what were the best and worst countries for food?
Well let me correct you a little there. I have never traveled to eat lol  I just made sure that I took the opportunity to enjoy the variety of cultures and foods wherever I go.  The best is France with Italy a close second. I loved the food in New Zealand as well. There was incredible Indian and Indonesian foods there. I didn’t love the food in Prague too much other than the sausages they sold at the street vendors. I would say Budapest was the worst food experience I had.

People should be pretty familiar with French and Italian food, so what’s the food like in New Zealand? And on the flipside why is Hungarian food so bad?
Before I went to New Zealand, I pictured everyone be sandy-haired white people, but it is so diverse and different! There are a lot of Asians and Indonesians and Indian people as well as Kiwis. The food selections were incredible. I would have a bowl of Japanese noodles for breakfast and then a traditional meat pie for lunch and then a great Thai or Indian meal for dinner. It was amazing! The Hungarian food was just very bland to me. Eastern European food just tends to be less dynamic. A lot of boiled food, which to me is not so great.

How many new recipes do you film in a week?
I update a brand new video every day of the week. So 7 new recipes a week. It is EXHAUSTING to come up with new recipes and ideas every day, but I love it. It consumes my entire week with planning the menu, then creating the recipe and shopping lists. Then you have to shop and then shoot it, and then edit the videos. It’s the hardest I have ever worked.

Cooking can require a lot of inspiration and creativity, how do you keep it fresh? 

I watch a lot of cooking channel and cooking videos online. I take the stuff I see and make them my own with a twist in the ingredients or whatever. I also make a lot of stuff from leftovers.

Is there any food that you refuse to cook?

I wouldn’t cook sweetbreads (pancreas) or any of the organs or hearts. I just don’t get into it. I wouldn’t cook balls either lol I see them eating bull balls on shows and it’s just so gross to me!

Your wine label’s first release just sold out. How did you get your own wine label and how do we get some?

I had met someone through a friend who is a famous wine producer in California. He developed the Kendall Jackson brand as well as Robert Mondavi and now has his own vineyard. He came to Tampa and we met and went to Bern’s Steakhouse which has the world’s largest wine cellar, and drank some of the greatest champagnes and wines in existence. We worked out a deal and he agreed to produce the wine and bottle it for me. It has been a lot of fun and a lot of work but the results and sales have been incredible. I attached a photo of the label for you :)

Do you think food porn creates an unrealistic expectation of food that is warping the minds of young, hungry people?

HAHAHAAHA I would say that food porn is great for the young minds of hungry people. It inspires creativity and you can create something artistic and delicious on a small budget if you try.

Who is the sexiest foodie, Mariah Milano or Anthony Bourdain?

I love Mr. Bourdain. His show is incredible and I share his love of slow cooked pork and meat.  I think he started the big foodie movement. I read his book “Kitchen Confidential” in one sitting on a flight from LA to Barcelona. I’ve read it more than once since. But he is not exactly sexy so I will have to give that honor to myself. Plus his wife is a flat out bad ass and I don’t wanna go there with her :) She has been very nice to me too so I’m not gonna fuck that up! :)

What’s next for Mariah Milano?
I just bought a new house so I’m moving and having a kitchen set built so I can have a separate kitchen for filming which I need badly. I plan to continue my youtube channel with new videos every day and growing my brand. I have a cookbook that is nearly completed and a line of merchandise as well. I still have my official website and my affiliate program that I run so my plate is full. I’m also going to Japan and Hong Kong this year which is a dream of mine. I am so excited about that trip! As well I’m buying an around the world pass on Delta and filming the entire thing as a documentary so that’s a big project starting in the fall. Mariah Milano Vineyards has a second release scheduled for October. So as you see, I’m busy! :)

Documentary around the world? That sounds amazing. Can you leak a couple of details for us fans?

Well I am going to get a “round the world” pass on Delta. The terms require that you continue in the same direction by at least 1 degree per segment. So I will be starting from here in Florida and travel east all the way around the world stopping for 3 or 4 days in each location. The entire thing will be filmed from morning til night, the good the bad and the ugly! :)
