URGENT: Porn ban threatens all of Europe

Yo. Europe. WTF?

Europe is largely regarded as the sophisticated continent, however the European Union is voting on a proposal next week that could ban all pornography in its states.

The proposal that could cause this large scale porn ban is cleverly titled, “Eliminating gender stereotypes in the EU.” Eliminating gender stereotypes is obviously an admirable cause as the proposal mentions issues such as women carrying a “disproportionate share of the burden” when raising a family, violence against women as “an infringement of human rights,” and gender stereotypes that develop early in life.

But in the pursuit of gender equality, the proposal is looking to infringe on the civil liberties of 500 million people.

Why call for complete censorship of pornography? Because of its ubiquity in mainstream culture. As it says in the proposal,

“17. Calls on the EU and its Member States to take concrete action on its resolution of 16 September 1997 on discrimination against women in advertising, which called for a ban on all forms of pornography in the media and on the advertising of sex tourism”

Normally one would assume that the media would not include the internet, however point 14 of the proposal suggests otherwise…

“14. …a policy to eliminate stereotypes in the media will of necessity involve action in the digital field; considers that this requires the launching of initiatives coordinated at EU level with a view to developing a genuine culture of equality on the internet; calls on the Commission to draw up in partnership with the parties concerned a charter to which all internet operators will be invited to adhere”

Not only are they trying to censor Europe’s access to internet pornography, the EU Parliament aren’t willing to police sexual content themselves. They want ISPs to police for them.

The language of the proposal is ambiguous and very broad. The worst part about the proposal is that it’s an attack on freedom of speech and freedom of expression hiding behind the guise of gender equality.

If this proposal were to pass, it wouldn’t just be porn sites that Europeans couldn’t access but also reddit, forums, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Youtube, Vine, Wikipedia, and other incredibly useful internet resources.

Though this proposal is just gestating and still a ways from being legislation, it’s important that Europeans have their voices heard lest their representatives unwittingly vote for censorship. There have been numerous reports that the European Parliament’s IT department has been blocking the delivery of emails from concerned citizens so we suggest that you tweet, Facebook, reddit, whatever.

We’ll be tweeting #PornforEurope, we hope you do the same.

This story is incorrect. There is no mention whatever of pornography in the report mentioned. Article 17 is not as you have quoted. See the full report below:

Cheers. I read this and figured it was bogus. There’s no way they would cripple a multi billion $£E industry.
